Algiz symbolizes protection and divine intervention. It is believed to be connected with the image of antlers, and acts as a barrier against external forces, serving as a warning to avoid potential harm. This rune is particularly potent as a form of spiritual protection and is used during times of recovery for the safety it provides.
The goddess Eir serves as one of Frigg's handmaids and Valkyries of Odin. She is revered as the goddess of medicine. Viking medicine, though intertwined with magic, prayers, and superstitions, also exhibited effectiveness in aiding recovery, evident from historical and saga accounts of recoveries from grievous wounds, showcasing the talent for medicine among both men and women alike.
During the Viking Age, warrior-shamans known as berserkers, or "bear-shirts," embodied the spirit of the bear in battle, representing protection and ferocity. These berserkers, like their animal totem, displayed immense strength and courage, often entering battle without armor but adorned with bear masks and pelts. Their fearless demeanor and invincibility against fire and iron were legendary, reflecting the protective qualities associated with the bear in mythology and shamanic traditions.
Similarly, Norse people thought holly protected them from lightning. It is often associated with Thor, the god of thunder, who carried holly branches and wore crowns and garlands of holly. Whether it is the totem of the bear or holly, these items associated with protection and recovery can amplify the meaning of the Algiz rune.
