ABOUT GEBO

Gebo symbolizes both material and spiritual gifts, embodying the principle that giving is as important as receiving. Positive emotions like love and compassion are central to this concept, reminding individuals that their actions will be mirrored in the world around them.

Freyja, the prominent Norse goddess, symbolizes partnership and connection. As the twin sister of the god Freyr, she embodies the bond between family members within the pantheon. Despite being a Vanir, she integrated into the Aesir community after the great war, emphasizing unity among different divine tribes. Her marriage to Odr, though his absence is noted, underscores the concept of resolute partnership, even amidst separation.

The songthrush is said to awaken and sing around the birches as Freyja passes through, symbolizing her connection to nature and the awakening of life and love. The bird's song is often seen as a harbinger of spring and renewal, reflecting Freyja's role in bringing fertility and vitality to the world.

The story of Freyja and Odr highlights the symbolism of the Flowering Myrtle Tree as representing the gift of connection. Freyja, embodying the Earth, sought her husband Odr, the summer sun, who often wandered alone, leaving her longing and sorrowful. Her tears softened the hard rocks, symbolizing her persistent search for him. When Freyja finally found Odur beneath the flowering myrtle in the sunny south, their reunion brought renewal and harmony to the world, reflecting the song thrush’s expressions and the essence of the Gebo rune.
