About Mannaz
Mannaz signifies humanity and individual destiny. Following one's destiny may bring challenges, but ultimately leads to fulfillment. Mannaz also emphasizes the importance of partnership and promotes strength, intelligence, and self-awareness.
The goddess Hel rules over the underworld, a melancholy place reserved for the dead. Those who do not enter the halls of Valhalla are destined to rot in the underworld or to be punished for the crimes if they were particularly evil in their lifetimes. Hel is connected to the concept of man, as she is the guardian of their souls and their fated afterlife. In Norse mythology, Hel is fated to lead the dead against the gods at Ragnarok, embodying themes of destiny and individual purpose.
Dogs in Norse mythology often symbolize guardianship and purpose. They are seen as guides to the underworld and aid the deceased on their journey. Garmr, a notable figure, embodies this role as a fierce guardian of Hel's gate. As man’s best friend, they are the designated spirit animal of Hel, and a symbol of the Mannaz rune.
The mandrake root, prized for its magical attributes, was sought for its potential to attract wealth and extract precious metals from the earth. Despite the dangers in harvesting it, people went to great lengths to obtain it, symbolizing the pursuit of purpose or ambition despite risks. The mandrake root was also believed to have human-like qualities due to its appearance. In fact, once obtained, it was difficult to lose the Mandrake root because it would follow its owner by foot. Like the mandrake, dogs and Hel demonstrate the power of persistence in a path of purpose.
